A self-contained interactive video display system. A flat-panel display screen displays a visual image for presentation to a user on a front side of the flat-panel display screen. A first illuminator illuminates the flat-panel display screen with visible light. A second illuminator illuminates an object. A camera detects interaction of an illuminated object with the visual image, wherein the camera is operable to view the object through the flat-panel display screen. A computer system directs the projector to change the visual image in response to the interaction.

UV reflectors incorporated in UV LED-based light sources reduce the amount of UV radiation emission into the surroundings and increase the efficiency of such light sources. UV reflectors are made of nanometer-sized particles having a mean particle diameter less than about one-tenth of the wavelength of the UV light emitted by the UV LED, dispersed in a molding or casting material surrounding the LED. Other UV reflectors are series of layers of materials having alternating high and low refractive indices; each layer has a physical thickness of one quarter of the wavelength divided by the refractive index of the material. Nanometer-sized textures formed on a surface of the multilayered reflector further reduce the emission of UV radiation into the surroundings. An optical system for a head-worn computer may include a light source positioned within the head-worn computer and adapted to project non-polarized illuminating light towards a partially reflective partially transmissive surface such that the illuminating light reflects through a field lens and towards a reflective display and a polarizing film adjacent to a surface of the reflective display that polarizes the illuminating light after it passes through the field lens. A full-color flexible light source device is disclosed. The device includes a plurality of light source units each comprises a red LED, a green LED, and a blue LED arranged in the shape of a triangle. The invention is related to a flat panel display and a backlight module thereof. The backlight module comprises a light source and a plurality of wavelength converters. The light source formed by some arranged luminous elements would radially emit light with an optical wavelength individually. These wavelength converters are near the light source and convert the light with the wavelength. The converted light with another wavelength is radially emitted, in which a portion of the converted light with another wavelength is emitted outward directly from the wavelength converter, while the other portion thereof is emitted from the wavelength converter toward the other wavelength converters.

A lighting fixture is disclosed which provides a substantially uniform elongated light output, yet is powered by only a minimum number of inexpensive light emitting diodes. The lighting fixture has a curved back surface and a selected focal area to provide a substantially uniform output. Multiple LEDs may be controlled by a controller to provide special lighting effects. Each of the side surfaces and the back surface may include a reflector. The device includes, at least one light source unit, a compound light guide with a built-in light-extracting feature and a reflective envelope. The compound light guide comprises two optically coupled sub-guides. The reflective envelope recycles all light leaked out of the light guide and protects the light guide from environmental contamination and provides mechanical interface between the device and the application assembly.

An illumination system comprises (a) a first optical element upon which a light beam impinges, where the first optical element has first raster elements that partition said light beam into light channels; (b) a second optical element that receives said light channels, where the second optical element has a second raster elements; (c) an object plane that receives said light channels via said second optical element; and (d) an exit pupil that is provided with an illumination via said object plane. The present invention provides an improved system for identifying defects in a composite structure by providing a light source such that defects, and in particular dark defects on a dark background and / or light defects on a light background, can be identified by capturing images of the illuminated composite structure. In particular, the improved system for identifying defects in a composite structure may provide a reflective surface, dispersion elements, and multiple and / or moveable light source(s) and / or camera(s) in order to ensure that the most accurate images of any area of the composite structure, even curved or contoured areas, are captured and processed. As a result, the system of the present invention permits the operator to quickly identify and correct defects which would otherwise create structural flaws or inconsistencies that may affect the integrity of the composite structure.

The pointing device may further include a flip chip containing an image sensor, which converts the acquired image into an electronic signal, and a circuit for signal processing. The pointing device may include an integrated optical structure comprising a condensing lens, a specular surface, a light output part, and an image-formation lens. The pointing device may include a light guide structure that a parallel light prism lens, an image-formation lens, and a mask for blocking disturbance ray are formed into a single part.

Disclosed is an apparatus for forming a high contrast image of a patterned object, such as a fingerprint, including a first lens having a light receiving surface and a viewing surface and a second lens adjacent to the viewing surface of the first lens. A light source projects incident light into the first lens between the viewing surface and imaging surface such that at least a portion of the incident light undergoes total internal reflection. An LED package comprises at least one LED that emits LED light in an LED emission profile. The LED package includes regions of scattering particles with the different regions scattering light primarily at a target wavelength or primarily within a target wavelength range. The location of the regions and scattering properties are based at least partially on the LED emission profile. The regions scatter their target wavelength of LED light to improve the uniformity of the LED emission profile so that the LED package emits a more uniform profile compared to the LED emission profile. By targeting particular wavelengths for scattering, the emission efficiency losses are reduced.

A transmittable display apparatus 1 comprises a liquid crystal display unit 2 and a plane light source unit 3 comprising a tubular light source 4, a light guide 5, and at least one anisotropic scattering sheet 7 disposed between the light guide and the display unit 2. An isotropic diffusing sheet, a prism sheet and an anisotropic scattering sheet may be disposed between the light guide and the display unit 2. In the light source unit 3, assuming that the axis-direction of the light source 4 is X-direction, the anisotropic scattering sheet is disposed with directing a main light-scattering direction of the sheet to Y-direction. In the display apparatus, the anisotropic scattering sheet is disposed in such a direction that a main light-scattering direction thereof is addressed to the horizontal direction of the display surface of the display unit. The anisotropic scattering sheet comprises a continuous phase (crystalline polypropylene) and a dispersed phase (noncrystalline copolyester, polystyrene) having the mean aspect ratio of more than 1, and these phases are different from each other in the refractive index. The anisotropic scattering sheet is capable of reducing the angle dependence on the luminance in a display surface of a transmittable liquid crystal display apparatus, even when the device comprises a tubular light source having anisotropy in the luminance distribution.

A data symbol reading apparatus, for reading an encoded data symbol, includes: an image pickup element; an image forming optical system for forming an image of the encoded data symbol located within a symbol read area onto a light-receiving surface of the image pickup element; and an illumination system.
