An outdoor enclosure for a remote terminal is designed so that a structure supporting protector modules (normally coupled between telephone lines and line cards to prevent damage from a surge in current or voltage) is easily reachable and removable. To upgrade from copper to fiber, the just-described hardware (also called “protect block”) is replaced with other hardware (also called “fiber fanout enclosure”) that supports adapters for receiving connectors of optical fibers. The protect block and the fiber fanout enclosure are designed to have approximately (or even exactly) the same footprint, so that they occupy at least some of the same space (before and after replacement). Reuse of the same space in this manner is advantageous over an outdoor enclosure designed to have additional space dedicated for adapters and fiber fanout enclosures to be added in future, because a more compact arrangement results from reuse of the same space.

The present invention relates to a brake-by-wire actuator for actuating the brake system of a motor vehicle, comprising a simulator which can be acted upon by a brake pedal, with a signal of an actuation sensor being sent to an electronic control unit which controls a pressure source in response to the signal of the actuation sensor, and wherein an output of the pressure source is connected to a distributor device for the brake force and actuates individual wheel brakes of the vehicle, also comprising means for enabling actuation of the brakes by muscular power within a fallback mode. In order to provide an improved fallback mode in a brake-by-wire actuator, according to the invention, a lost travel is provided between a first actuation component such as a brake pedal in particular or a component articulated at the brake pedal and an actuation component that is connected downstream in the flux of force, in particular an input member, in order to uncouple the first actuation component mechanically from the reactions of force of the motor vehicle brake system in the by-wire mode.

Image browsing through memory-stored items, such as a library of images or desktop windows, is efficiently performed by arranging images in partially overlapping fashion and generating a second-level image for each overlapped image that is contacted by a user-manipulated cursor. The second-level image is a “transitory” image, since it is removed as soon as the cursor is displaced from the corresponding first-level image. Thus, by placing the first-level images in a diagonally extending stack, straight line movement of the cursor will initiate a sequential presentation of transitory images for the images in the stack. In one embodiment, the display also includes an incrementing icon and a decrementing icon that are employed to provide substitute stacks. Moreover, a third-level image is formed in a separate window when the user selects one of the images from the stack. This third-level image has more permanency, since it remains in the display window after the stack has been substituted. The images may be digital photographs, but other applications are contemplated.

The frame supporting module provides a structural support for the whole testing equipment, the tension / compression-low cycle fatigue module is arranged at upper and lower ends of the testing equipment, the torsioning module (21) is directly arranged at a front end of the tension / compression-low cycle fatigue module, the three-point bending module (6), the impressing module (33) and the thermal field and magnetic field application module (34) are disposed on a support post at one side of the whole testing equipment through a common replacing component, and the in-situ observation module is disposed on another support post at the other side of the testing equipment. The clamp body module is connected to a front segment of the torsioning module, so as to clamp a test piece. An overall structure of the testing equipment is configured in a vertically symmetrical arrangement achieved by using four support posts. Two identical servo hydraulic cylinders (10) and two torsioning modules (21) are located at the upper and the lower ends of the testing equipment respectively and are used to perform a symmetrical tension / compression test and a symmetrical torsion test on the test piece (23) positioned centrally. The testing equipment is capable of realizing applications of five different types of loads including tension / compression, low cycle fatigue, torsion, bending and impressing, performing an intensive study on micromechanical properties of the material in the multi-load and multi-physical field coupled condition by using built-in electric, thermal and magnetic application modules and the in-situ observation module, and acquiring relations between deformation behavior, mechanism of damage, performance weakening of the material, applied loads and material properties.

A rod having an embedded optical fibre has a stiff composite outer layer (10) to make the rod self straightening to enable it to be pushed into a pipe or borehole from a spool. This can help enable a reduction of friction between rod and conduit and can enable longer reach. A barrier layer is provided to separate the fibre from the composite layer. The rod can be retrieved after use. The rod can be narrow enough to enable normal flow along the pipe or borehole, and can be injected and retrieved even when the pipe or borehole is pressurised. The fibre can be used for remote sensing of conditions along the conduit. Other tools can be inserted by the rod during the intervention.
