Automated annular plication for mitral valve repair

InactiveUS6913608B2Stabilize and improve left ventricular functionAvoid developmentSuture equipmentsBone implantMitral valve leafletMitral valve operation
A novel system for performing a heart valve annuloplasty. The system involves the use of a plication band. In one embodiment, the annulus of the valve is reduced by constriction of the plication band itself. More particularly, each plication band enters the tissue at two or more points which are spaced from one other by a distance which is dictated by the geometry of the plication band. Subsequent constriction of the plication band causes these points to move toward each other, thereby constricting the tissue trapped between these points and thus reducing the overall circumference of the valve annulus. In a second embodiment, the annulus of the valve is reduced by linking multiple plication bands to one other, using a linkage construct, and then using a shortening of the length of the linkage construct between each plication band so as to gather the tissue between each plication band, whereby to reduce the overall circumference of the valve annulus.

Providing redundancy in a virtualized storage system for a computer system

A method for providing redundancy in a virtualized storage system for a computer system is provided. The method includes determining a first set of first logical addresses to provide a virtual storage volume. A redundancy schema is then selected to provide redundancy data for primary data stored in the first set of first logical addresses. A second set of second logical addresses is determined to provide logical storage for the primary data and for the redundancy data. The first set of first logical addresses and the second set of second logical addresses are then mapped and a set of physical storage addresses is selected from a set of physical storage elements. Mapping between the second set of second logical addresses and the set of physical addresses is then performed to provide physical storage for the primary data and the redundancy data stored in the virtual storage volume.

Fast IP route lookup with configurable processor and compressed routing table

A novel compression method uses bitmaps to reduce the memory storage requirement of routing table information to about 3 MB. The data structure can be used for both route lookup and update. It does not require a separate data structure to be used for route update. A fast route lookup method is also disclosed. An efficient update method supports incremental route update. Through configuring a processor properly and developing a few customized instructions specifically for route lookup, the system can achieve more than 10 million lookups per second (MLPS) at 200 MHz. Using a configurable processor for route lookup / update provides more flexibility and extensibility which supports different data structures and lookup / update methods to meet application specific needs. The data structure and lookup method can be implemented in pure hardware in a pipelined fashion to achieve approximately 100 MLPS.

Modular, hierarchically organized artificial intelligence entity

A modular artificial intelligence learning entity (a "golem") which is replicated many times to form a super-entity that shows intelligent behavior transcending that of its individual constituents. Within the group of golems, individual golems may occupy roles, and are role differentiated, in that structurally identical entities perform different functions and exhibit different behavior depending on their personas and the learning they have completed as driven by other entities. The group of golems is hierarchically organized, in the sense that 'superior' entities issue policies to 'subordinate' entities. In addition to responding to 'sense' input from its environment, the golem responds to policy requirements set by other entities, including its superiors, and in turn sets policy requirements for its subordinates. Actions of the golem are measured for successful compliance with that golem's policies by its superior, who directs the golem's learning process. The super-entity thus gains intelligence through the policy reinforcement occurring in each superior-subordinate relationship. This scheme is well adapted to working over a network with logically separated but communicating golems. Its flexibility allows its application both to single complex problems and to repetitively occurring simple problems. Opportunities for its use arise in operating environments, in simulation and gaming, and in research.

Folding knife

A folding hand tool with an open-assist mechanism that is not mechanically linked to a folding knife blade is disclosed. The open-assist mechanism is allowed to rotate around the same pivot used by the blade, and includes a lug that interacts with the kick of the blade when rotated. Because the open-assist mechanism is not mechanically linked to the blade, it has a range of free motion that promotes safety, and allows the mechanism to rotate into the blade cavity when the blade is extended. The folding knife also may have a carabiner that shares the blade cavity with the blade, with the blade nesting into the carabiner to save space, thereby giving the folding knife a smaller profile.
