Embodiment Construction

[0018] As shown in FIG. 1 , the body 10 has a cowl 16 that is connected to the cowl side 22 and the structural member 24 by welds 20 that directly mount the cowl 16 to the cowl side 22 and the structural member 24 . This mounting is achieved by side mounting flanges 18a and b. Flange 18a is an upper flange and flange 18b is a lower flange. Both flange 18a and flange 18b allow direct welding of the cowl 16 to the cowl side 22 and to the structural part 24 without the need for intermediate parts.

[0019] In addition to being welded to cowl side 22 and structural member 24 , cowl 16 is welded to A-pillar 28 at A-pillar mounting flange 26 . Mounting flange 26 is a double thickness flange that, like lateral mounting flange 18, is formed in a hydroforming die. This eliminates the need for additional steps or processing to form the side mount and A-pillar mount flanges.

[0020] The cowl 16 has a windshield support flange 34 which is a double thickness flange extending laterally...

Abstract

A body of a motor vehicle comprising a generally tubular, hydroformed cowl having an integral mounting flange welded to an engine compartment structural member and a cowl side member. The neck can be hydroformed from several different preforms with symmetrical and asymmetrical geometric features.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a generally tubular, hydroformed cowl structure which is integral with the body of the vehicle. A neck extends laterally across the body at the base of the windshield or at the base of the rear window of the vehicle. Background technique [0002] As shown in Figure 6, the cowl structure of a vehicle typically consists of two pieces. According to this existing structure, the inner cowl 100 is stamped and then welded between the sides of the vehicle cowl. A cowl top outer panel 102 is then added to the cowl, typically by spot welding. This process entails a number of concomitant complex and costly operations, as the welding of the cowl top inner panel 100 to the body as a unit and thereafter welding the cowl top outer panel 102 to the assembled body structure , separate welding equipment must be used. The hydroformed neck of the present invention eliminates the need for welding and sealing of a separate top plate, red...
