Abstract

A piezoelectric isolation transformer (20) is characterized by its operating frequency range and includes a resonant structure (21) having at least one mechanical resonance within the operating frequency range. The resonant structure has an insulating base (30), a first electro-acoustic transducer (40) and a second electro-acoustic transducer (50). The substrate has a first major surface and a second major surface opposite the first major surface. A first electro-acoustic transducer is mechanically coupled to the first major surface. A second electro-acoustic transducer is mechanically coupled to the second major surface. One of the transducers (40, 50) converts input electrical energy in the operating frequency range into acoustic energy capable of exciting mechanical vibrations in the resonant structure. Another converter converts mechanical vibrations into output electrical energy.

Background technique [0001] Galvanic isolation converters provide electrical isolation between electrical components. Traditional isolated converters are based on magnetic coupling and are traditionally line frequency. Isolating transformers operating at line frequencies are large, heavy, and difficult to integrate with the circuit elements between which they provide isolation. Isolating converters operating at frequencies higher than the line frequency have recently appeared. This reduces the size and weight of isolated transformers, but such isolated transformers are still difficult to integrate with the circuit elements between which they provide isolation. Low power galvanic isolation is provided by optocouplers and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices. However, the energy transfer capability of such devices is limited to a few milliwatts.
