Embodiment Construction

[0020] Embodiments of the invention will be described herein in the context of a checkpoint security system. However, it should be understood that the embodiments provided herein are merely example embodiments, and the scope of the present invention is not limited to the applications or embodiments disclosed herein. For example, the system of the present invention can be used for automated testing of small packages and mail, checking packaged consumable items (eg, food, medicines) among other items.

[0021] The multi-threat detection system of the present invention can be used to detect the presence of various threat items. A "threat item" is any substance and or combination of substances and objects that may be of interest to security systems, including but not limited to: explosives, explosive devices, improvised explosive devices, chemical warfare agents, industrial products and other chemical drugs, biological agents, contraband, narcotics, weapons, and radioactive mater...

Abstract

A method and system for efficiently screening for dangerous threatening items are presented. The system includes an object unit designed to hold the object and a test unit including equipment for subjecting the object to a combination of two or more tests. There are sensors located in the object unit, wherein each of the sensors reads data resulting from testing the object and generates an outputsignal. A computation unit receives the output signal from each of the sensors and processes the output signals in parallel to determine a risk factor based on parameters resulting from the two or more tests. The parallel acquisition and processing of the output signals enhances accuracy. By testing a ''batch'' of objects at once, the system improves throughput.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This patent application claims U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / 608,689, filed September 10, 2004, and U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / 680,313, filed May 13, 2005, under 35 USC § 199(e) interests, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to systems for detecting the presence of threatening items, and more particularly, to systems for detecting the presence of threatening items in parallel using multiple tests. Background technique [0004] Today, checkpoint security systems at public places like airports or government buildings typically include some combination of imaging tests, metal detectors, and chemical tests. Chemical testing typically uses tabletop Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) instruments, in which a swab or air sample is taken from an object (eg, a package) and tested to trace explosive materials.
