Embodiment Construction

[0036] Referring now to FIGS. 1 and 2 , a distal radius volar fixation plate (or generally any "end" plate or metaphyseal plate) 10 includes a distal head 12 and a proximal shaft 14 . In a preferred embodiment, plate 10 corresponds to that described in previously incorporated US Patent No. 10 / 985,598. However, other metaphyseal plates may also be employed for different locations on the radius or even for displacement on different bones.

[0037] The head 12 of the illustrated volar fixation plate 10 has a plurality of alignment holes 16 sized to closely receive K-wires in a fixed angular relationship and two rows 17a, 17b of longitudinally misaligned screw holes 18 (which are used for to receive the fixing element through the screw hole 18). In a preferred embodiment, the screw holes 18 are threaded and are therefore particularly adapted to receive locking screws and / or pegs locked in axial alignment with respect to the plate.

[0038] The shaft 14 has at least one alignment...

Abstract

A fracture fixation plate system for use on a long bone having a metaphysis and a diaphysis comprising at least one end plate having a head for the metaphysis and at least one end plate having a first end and a second end A bone plate with a plurality of screw holes between the first end and the second end of the bone plate. The end plate includes mating structure adapted to mate and securely couple with at least one end of the at least one bone plate. The system preferably includes several endplates and bone plates to accommodate anatomical structures of various sizes.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to surgical implantation. More specifically, the present invention relates to fracture fixation systems. Background technique [0002] Fractures of the metaphyseal portion of long bones can be difficult to treat. Inappropriate treatment may result in deformity and long-term discomfort. [0003] For example, a Coleusian fracture is a fracture caused by compressive forces exerted on the distal radius and which results in posterior or dorsal displacement of the distal bone fragment and radial deviation of the hand at the wrist. Typically, a Coleusian fracture will result in multiple bone fragments that can move and are out of line relative to each other. If not managed properly, this fracture can lead to permanent wrist deformity and limited articulation of the wrist. Therefore, it is important to align fractures and fix these bones relative to each other so that proper healing can occur. [0004] Alignment and...
