Embodiment Construction

[0027] Referring to the drawings, various embodiments of the device are schematically shown in vertical section. Furthermore, various exemplary embodiments of the device are described in connection with use in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine. It should be understood, however, that the present invention is not limited to application in internal combustion engines.

[0028] Each of the embodiments shown has a particulate filter 10 comprising a housing 12 or canister in which a filter body 14 is accommodated. The filter body 14 comprises a plurality of elongated tubular inlet and outlet units 16 , 17 extending transversely to the depth of the filter body 14 . In other words, the inlet and outlet units 16 , 17 extend substantially parallel to the air flow through the filter 10 . Each cell 16 , 17 is delimited by a porous ceramic wall 18 and each has an end closed by a ceramic plug 20 . Unless otherwise stated, the filter body 14 is mounted within the housing ...

Abstract

The present invention provides an apparatus and method for removing particulates from a gas stream. The apparatus comprises a ceramic filter (14), at least one electrode (32) and at least one conductor (40). The electrode (32) is located at an end of the filter (14) and produces an atmospheric glow discharge in order to oxidise carbon deposits trapped in the filter (14). The conductor (40) extends at least partially into the filter (14) and acts as a counter electrode. Through various arrangements of the electrodes and conductors, the present invention provides closer connection between the trapped carbon deposits and the electrodes. This improves the regeneration of the filter without increasing the size and / or weight of the apparatus.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for removing particles from a gas stream, said apparatus being automatically and selectively regenerated (self-cleaning) during use. Background technique [0002] Internal combustion engines and equipment that burn static hydrocarbons tend to expel carbonaceous particulates commonly referred to as particulates through their exhaust systems. Particulate filters (trap) in the exhaust system of such equipment are useful in helping to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations and public expectations when efforts are being made to reduce particulate emissions at source. [0003] Regenerable particulate filters are known. It is particularly desirable that the particulate filter regenerate itself under any load in use in order to maintain above a certain level of filtration and airflow efficiency while minimizing filter size. It is also desirable that the filter itself controls to regenera...
