Embodiment Construction

[0033] In FIG. 1, a first exemplary traffic sensing and monitoring device of the present invention, shown generally at 100, includes: a continuous wave laser 102; acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) 104, 106; The optical fiber 111 of the sensing portion 112 at 121; the photodetector 108 (eg, a photodiode); and an interrogation system 110 arranged to acquire samples of the photodetector output signal and process the samples to produce an output signal. The light output of laser 102 is coupled to optical fiber 103 . Optical fiber 107 is coupled to optical fiber 103 through coupler 119 . Optical fibers 103, 107 are input to AOMs 104, 106, respectively. The outputs of AOMs 104 , 106 are coupled into optical fibers 111 , 109 respectively, and optical fiber 109 is coupled to optical fiber 111 at location 113 . The optical path between AOM 104 and location 113 is greater than the optical path between AOM 106 and location 113 due to the 24m delay loop 105 of fiber 111 . The sensing por...

Abstract

Traffic sensing and monitoring apparatus (100) comprises a length of optical fibre (112), means (102, 103, 104, 106, 107, 109, 119) arranged to introduce a series of pulse pairs into an input end of the length, each of the pulse pairs comprising first and second pulses of radiation having a frequency difference O and the second pulse being delayed with respect to the first by a delay t, and the apparatus further comprising a photodetector arranged to detect radiation which is Rayleigh-backscattered within the length of fibre towards the input end to generate an output signal in response thereto. Apparatus of the invention allows sensing and monitoring of traffic at any position along a long length of road (e.g. 5km) with lower installation and maintenance costs per unit length compared to prior art systems providing the same spatial resolution.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to devices and methods for sensing and monitoring traffic, especially but not limited to road traffic. For example, the invention may also be applied to sensing and monitoring rail traffic or aircraft on runways. Background technique [0002] It is useful to be able to sense and monitor motor vehicles on a stretch of road or on a stretch of lanes on a multi-lane highway, as it allows detection of congested sections of the road. This detection allows drivers to be alerted in advance of the presence of such sections, avoiding further traffic jams. Such detection also allows authorities to make rational use of available road resources, if the sensing and monitoring is detailed enough. For example, a hard shoulder may be made available for drivers to travel when lanes on a portion of a highway become congested. In the long run, detailed information on traffic density is beneficial for long-term planning for updating or impr...
