Embodiment Construction

[0009] The metal shell (1 ) of the implant of the present invention is a 180 degree (precisely hemispherical) thin-walled spherical shell with a polished outer (convex) surface. The inner (concave) surface of the metal housing is also hemispherical. This provides an important benefit in that the circumferential edge of the shell is maximized; thus, only minimal peripheral contour matching is required for fixation to the femoral head, thereby avoiding extensive bone removal.

[0010] Furthermore, the metal shell (1) of the implant of the invention has a short trunnion (2) on the central axis of the inner (concave) surface. This provides an important benefit in that large holes need not be drilled deep along the femoral head and femoral neck, thereby preserving the integrity of the underlying bone and local blood vessels.

[0011] Furthermore, the metal shell (1) of the implant of the present invention has thin meridian blades (3) on the inner (concave) surface and a female thr...

Abstract

The present invention is an implant meant for hip resurfacing arthroplasty, a surgical reconstruction performed on patients with diseased hips, during which the surgeon replaces the surface of the femoral head with a polished metallic spherical shell. The presented implant consists of a metallic shell (1) with a polished hemispherical outer surface and an inner hemispherical concave surface, which possesses a trunnion (2) with a thread (4) and thin meridian fins (3) and is fully metal porous coated for osseointegration between implant and bone. The presented implant is fitted onto the appropriately contoured femoral head and is stabilized by means of a preload tension wire (5), which drills the femoral head and neck and exits the greater trochanter.; The wire attaches proximally to the thread (4) of the trunnion (2) of the shell and distally to a nut-washer combination (6), by the tightening of which establishment of preload is achieved.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention is a hip resurfacing implant for use in hip resurfacing arthroplasty, ie, a surgical modification performed on a patient with a diseased hip joint. Background technique [0002] Patients with a diseased hip (eg, osteoarthritis) typically undergo a total hip replacement to relieve pain and restore function to the joint. In this reconstruction the acetabulum of the pelvis is replaced with an implant, and the upper part of the femur (neck and bone) is also replaced with an implant assembled from polished spherical bearing surfaces. [0003] However, in some cases it is clinically possible to preserve the femoral neck and femoral head, while the surgical modification is limited to the replacement of the bearing surface of the femoral head (hip resurfacing arthroplasty). This is achieved with a polished metal implant whose geometry resembles a thin-walled spherical shell that is anchored to a correspondingly contoured femoral head. ...
