Embodiment Construction

[0022] Watermarking encoded content can be broken down into three separate steps:

[0023] • Position selection, which is the selection of positions where the value of the encoded content can be replaced by a substitute value containing the watermark signal.

[0024] • Substitute value calculation, which is the determination of a substitute value such that the substitute value has the same number of bits as the value it will replace in the encoded content, and such replacement does not cause a perceptual change of the content. Additionally, these substitute values contain a watermark signal.

[0025] • Watermark embedding / insertion, which is the actual replacement of a value in the encoded content by one of the substitute values.

[0026] The first and second steps can be preprocessed. As a result of preprocessing, a set of watermark units (WU) is generated. WU contains all the information for actually embedding / inserting the watermark. The watermark preprocessor takes t...

Abstract

A system and method for inserting a watermark in encoded content are described including receiving encoded content, receiving at least one watermark unit comprising information on the position of an original value to be replaced by an alternative value and alternative values and replacing directly a number of bits starting at the position with one of the alternative values, wherein the alternative value has embedded therein watermark signals. An apparatus and method for generating watermark units are also described including selecting a position where a value in encoded content is to be replaced by an alternative value and calculating the alternative value.; Further a system and method for replacing a watermark in encoded content are also described including receiving encoded content, receiving at least one watermark unit and replacing a number of bits starting at a position in the encoded content with a value, wherein the value is specified in the at least one watermark unit and further wherein the position is specified in the at least one watermark unit.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to digital watermarking, and more particularly to embedding, removing / replacing and detecting digital watermarks in encoded content. Background technique [0002] Encoding content requires a "decoding" process in order to use the content. Some examples of encoded content include MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H264 / AVC, WMA, MPEG4, JPEG2000, MP3, PDF, Windows Word, Postscript, etc., and their encrypted versions. [0003] One prior art method of watermarking coded content is to insert watermark signals in structural and syntactic elements. US 6,687,384 is an example of embedding data in syntax elements of coded bitstreams such as MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. However, such watermarks cannot survive format changes or digital-to-analog conversion. [0004] Another prior art method of watermarking encoded content is to embed the watermark by adding noise to the DCT coefficients used for MPEG encoded content. An example of this method is described by...
