Embodiment Construction

[0017] Reference will now be made in detail to the preferred embodiments of the invention, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

[0018] The present invention provides a new distributed base station architecture including DEMUX and MUX for use in cellular systems. The new distributed architecture includes one or more base stations, one or more DEMUXs and one or more MUXs. The following discussion focuses on one base station, one DEMUX and one MUX, but it should be understood that multiple base stations, multiple DEMUXs and multiple MUXs may be used in the system.

[0019] DEMUX

[0020] DEMUX 40 includes network interface device 1 , delay device 2 , address generator device 3 and internet protocol interface device 4 . The base station controller 17 is coupled with the network interface device 1, such as Figure 5 shown in . The network interface 1 is coupled with a delay device 2 . The internet protocol interface device 4 is coupled with the add...

Abstract

A novel distributed base station architecture having a multiplexer. The base station transmits base station controller interface data over an internet protocol (IP) communication channel. The multiplexer receives the data and combines it with other base station controller interface data to form a single base station controller interface data signal.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to cellular networks and, more particularly, to methods and apparatus for combining signals from multiple spatially distributed base stations using multiplexers (MUX) and demultiplexers (DEMUX) to overcome deployment barriers and enhance mobile coverage . Background technique [0002] Deployment of cellular coverage (third generation and above) for mobile coverage includes having a core network connected to a base station controller (BSC). The BSC, also known as a Radio Network Controller (RNC), is connected to and controls a plurality of base stations. Each base station includes at least one sector, and each sector is connected to and controls a cellular telephone within its wireless coverage area. The communication channel between the base station controller and each base station is unique and dedicated to that base station, referred to herein as the Iub communication channel. The Iub communication channel enables the...
