Problems solved by technology

However, superconductors require extremely cold operating temperatures (e.g., about -269 to -196 degrees Celsius or 4 to 77 degrees Kelvin) in order to superconduct, while superconductors have zero impedance when carrying non-alternating current ("DC") With alternating current ("AC") current, impedance increases with frequency, which results in losses in the form of heating that counteract the beneficial effects described above

Embodiment Construction

[0009] In the following detailed description, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of various embodiments. However, embodiments may be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, well-known methods, procedures, and components have not been described in detail.

[0010] Additionally, various operations may be described as multiple discrete steps performed in a manner that is helpful in understanding embodiments of the invention. However, the order of description should not be construed to imply that these operations need to be performed in the order they are presented or that they are even order dependent. Furthermore, repeated uses of the phrase "in one embodiment" do not necessarily all refer to the same embodiment, although the same embodiment might. Finally, as used in this application, the terms "comprises," "comprising," "having," etc. are synonymous unless indicated otherwise.

Abstract

The present invention discloses a system involving superconducting direct drive generators for wind power applications. The system (100) used for power generation includes a superconducting direct drive wind generator (102) including an armature coil (208) constructed of a first superconducting material and a field coil (210) constructed of a second superconducting material, wherein, during operation of the generator (102), the armature coil (208) and the field coil (210) are in electromagnetic communication and the field coil (210) produces a magnetic field in response to an excitation current flow therethrough that induces an output current flow in the armature coil (208) that generates an electrical power output.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the present invention relate generally to superconducting generators and, more particularly, to systems for wind power applications that include superconducting direct drive generators. Background technique [0002] In this regard, superconducting generators have been fabricated by constructing generator field coils (which typically carry approximately direct current) of superconducting material ("superconductor") instead of plain copper. Compared to traditional conductors such as copper, superconductors are generally lighter in weight, smaller in size (eg, relative to ampacity), and more efficient at conducting electrical current, especially at lower frequencies. Thus, the use of superconductors in wind applications, such as wind turbine generators, provides benefits such as more efficient performance, lower generator weight, non-gearbox direct drive operation, and lower manufacturing and installation costs. However, superconductors re...
