Problems solved by technology

[0014] Even when the breathing airway is adequately maintained, the "life" of existing sidestream gas sampling disposables that use filters is limited by the amount of water absorbed by the filter, so existing sidestream gas sampling disposables that incorporate sidestream gas sampling The cost of patient interfaces limits their widespread adoption for some applications
Using dehumidifiers, such as Nafion, can also exacerbate this problem, and dehumidifiers are relatively expensive components

Embodiment Construction

[0028] figure 2A gas delivery device 40 suitable for use in a sidestream gas sampling system 30 including a gas sensor 20 is shown schematically in accordance with the principles of the present invention. Gas delivery device 40 transports a gas flow, ie a sidestream of gas, from a gas sampling location, such as a patient airway or patient air circuit, to gas sensor 20 so that the composition of the gas flow can be measured by the gas sensor.

[0029] In the exemplary embodiment shown, gas delivery device 40 includes patient interface device 42 and gas sensor connector device 44 that are selectively and releasably coupled to each other to form the gas delivery device. During use, patient interface device 42 is also coupled to a gas sampling location and gas sensor connector device 44 is coupled to a gas sensor.

[0030] Patient interface device 42 includes a patient interface portion 46 that is in fluid communication with a gas sampling location. In one embodiment, the gas sa...

Abstract

Apparatus and method of sampling gas from a patient using a gas sampling assembly that include a patient interface assembly having a patient interface portion and a first gas sampling tube. The patient interface portion communicates with an airway of a patient and is attached to a first end of the first gas sampling tube so that the patient interface assembly is a unitary component. A second gas sampling tube is releasably engageable with the second end of the first gas sampling tube such that substantially smooth and undisturbed fluid flow is maintained between the first gas sampling tube and the second gas sampling tube. The second gas sampling tube connects to a gas sensor and can be used with other patient interface assemblies.

Description

[0001] priority statement [0002] This application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §119(e) to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 833,678, filed July 27, 2006. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a sidestream gas sampling gas system, and more particularly, to configuring and using a gas delivery assembly of such a system such that portions of the gas delivery assembly are disposable while other portions of the gas delivery assembly are disposable. reusable, thereby providing flexibility in the configuration of sidestream gas sampling gas systems while maximizing their utility. Background technique [0004] During medical treatment, it is often desirable to monitor and analyze a patient's exhaled breath to determine the gas composition of the exhaled breath. For example, monitoring a patient's exhaled carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) content is often desired. Typically, the level of carbon dioxide (or other gas) in a patient's exhaled breath is m...
