Embodiment Construction

[0059] With reference to the accompanying drawings, figure 1 A system 10 for intravenously dispensing medical fluids to a patient is shown, the system 10 comprising a pump 12 according to the present invention. The pump 12 may be housed within a frame 14 and electrically connected to a controller 16 which may control the operation of the pump 12 and which is also housed within the frame 14 .

[0060] One liquid inlet of pump 12 ( figure 1 (not shown) is fluidly connected to a fluid source, which may include a bag 20, commonly referred to as an IV bag, containing fluid 22 to be dispensed. As is known in the art, the fluid 22 may include various drugs as well as other fluids, such as physiological saline. The system 10 may further include a first tube section 24, which may include a single tube or a plurality of interconnected tubes. Tube 24 may pass through a tube inlet 18 of frame 14 and be fluidly connected to a fluid inlet ( figure 1 not shown). The other end of the tub...

Abstract

A pump module (50) is provided for use in a medical fluid dispensing system that includes a pump body (52) made of a non-compliant material and first (54) and second (56) pump chambers formed in the body. Each of the chambers has a first, open end (58) and an opposite, closed end (60). The pump module (50) further includes first (68a) and second (68b) pistons in the first (54) and second (56) pump chambers, respectively. At least one fluid inlet (90a) and a fluid outlet (90c) are selectively in fluid communication with the first (54) and second (56) pump chambers. Each of the pistons (68a, 68b) extends through the open end of a respective one of the pump chambers (54, 56), with each of the pistons (68a, 68b) being operably translatable within the pump chamber toward and away from the closed end (60, 64) of the chamber. The pistons are translatable independently of one another.

Description

Technical field: [0001] The present invention relates to pumps and in particular to pump modules for use in medical fluid dispensing systems. Background technique: [0002] Various known pumps are used to dispense medical fluids. Syringes are widely used to dispense relatively small doses of medical fluids (which may contain high concentrations of pharmaceuticals). The maximum dose of the syringe is usually around 60ml. After this dose has been dispensed, the health care provider must replace the spent syringe to continue administering the drug. Therefore, syringes cannot be used for bolus applications, such as bolus blood supply to patients in need or dispensing bolus fluids (such as saline) to burn patients in different circumstances. [0003] The syringe may be used in conjunction with a syringe pump, which automatically operates the plunger of the syringe. Typically, the piston tip is made of soft rubber. When the plunger is pushed to dispense liquid, the tip is com...
