Abstract

The present application discloses a method and system for assigning an internet protocol (IP) address, which are used to determine the type of the IP address which is assigned to a user equipment (UE) by a local network, and assign an IP address of the type to the UE, in the local network without packet data network gateways (PDNGWs) and gateway general packet radio service support nodes (GGSNs) in the core networks, through a user mobility control and management entity. A method for assigning an IP address provided by the present application comprises: according to information of a local network to which a UE requests an access, a user mobility control and management entity instructs a home base station to connect the UE to the local network by establishing a radio bearer of the local network for the UE; the user mobility control and management entity determines the type of the IP address which is assigned to the UE by the local network, and instructs the UE to acquire an IP address of the type from the home base station; and the home base station assigns an IP address to the UE, according to a message requesting for IP address assignment, which is sent by the UE.
