Abstract

A biopsy system (10) comprises a control module (12), a localization assembly (15), a biopsy device (14), and a targeting cube (104). The biopsy device comprises a holster portion (32) and a probe (91). The probe and / or other associated components are configured to selectively couple with a targeting cube that is configured to selectively couple with a grid plate (96) having apertures (130) for receiving the targeting cube. The targeting cube comprises a body defined by faces (112,114,116). The targeting cube further comprises guide holes (106,108,110) that originate and terminate at the faces and pass through the body of the targeting cube to provide passageways through the targeting cube. The intersections of the faces of the targeting cube comprise edges that are comprised of elastomeric material. The elastomeric edges allow for compression and may thus provide a secure fit with a wide range of grid plates having openings of various shapes and sizes.

Description

Background technique [0001] Biopsy samples can be obtained in a variety of ways during a variety of medical procedures using a variety of devices. The biopsy device may be used under stereotactic guidance, ultrasound guidance, MRI guidance, PEM guidance, BSGI guidance or other guidance. A biopsy device, by way of example only, is disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 6,273,862, issued August 14, 2001, entitled "Surgical Device for the Collection of Soft Tissue" ; Issued on May 15, 2001, U.S. Patent No. 6,231,522 titled "Biopsy Instrument with Breakable Sample Segments" (biopsy instrument with a fragile sample segment); issued May 8, 2001, titled "Devices for US Patent No. 6,228,055 for "Marking and Defining Particular Locations in Body Tissue" (apparatus for marking and defining specific locations in body tissue); issued September 19, 2000, entitled "Control Method for an Automated Surgical Biopsy Device "(control method of automated surgical biopsy device) U.S. Patent No. 6,120,462;...
