Embodiment 1
[0060] Five dentifrice compositions were prepared, formulated to achieve a theoretically available fluoride ion concentration of 5,000 ppm. The ingredients of the compositions are shown in Table 1.
[0061] Table 1
[0062]
[0063] Compositions X, A and B form a paste suitable as toothpaste. Composition C was found to form a paste suitable as toothpaste. Composition D was found not to form a paste useful as a dentifrice composition.
Embodiment 2
[0065] Compositions X, A and B were used by volunteers and found to have a "smooth" feel. After using Composition C, volunteers found the composition to have a "smooth" feel in the mouth.
Embodiment 3
[0067]Compositions X, A, B and C were tested for fluoride ion availability when initially prepared, after 3 months of accelerated aging (at 40°C and 75% relative humidity), and after 6 months of accelerated aging . The results are provided in Table 2.
[0068] Table 2
[0069]
[0070] The results show that compositions lacking xanthan gum, pectin and PVME / MA copolymer suffer an immediate loss of fluoride ion availability. For Compositions A and C, the initial fluoride ion availability after preparation was unacceptable (less than 90%); therefore, no aging studies were performed on Compositions A and C. Composition B continued to lose available fluoride ions over time. Surprisingly, Composition X maintained a complete and complete amount of available fluoride even after 6 months of aging.
