Abstract

The invention provides a method for carrying out a video session, a video session system and set top boxes (STBs). The method comprises the following steps: a microprogrammed control unit (MCU) negotiates the capabilities of the STBs for the video session and keeps the IP address sets of the STBs for the video session and the correspondence between each IP address in the IP address sets and the video format of the corresponding STB; the STBs at the transmitting end acquire the video data from a camera and transmit the video data to the MCU; the MCU finds out the video format of the STB corresponding to the IP address of each STB at the transmitting end in the correspondence, converts the video data transmitted by the STBs at the transmitting end into the video coded formats corresponding to the found video formats of the STBs and then sends the video data to the corresponding STBs at the transmitting end; and the STBs at the transmitting end receive the video data and transmit the video data to a TV to be played after carrying out corresponding decoding on the video data. The cost of the video session can be lowered by adopting the scheme in the invention.
