[0027] figure 1 shows the linearization for the nonlinear sensor R NTC The circuit diagram of the device. A nonlinear sensor according to the present invention is a sensor whose provided signal follows a nonlinear curve in response to a linear change in a phenomenon. The non-linear sensor may be any transducer that responds to phenomena such as temperature, pressure, airflow, etc. by changing an electrically detectable characteristic. Such characteristics include thermocouple voltage and temperature sensitive resistance changes. A nonlinear sensor with a negative phenomenological coefficient comprises a sensing element made of a material whose electrical conductivity increases as the value of the phenomenology increases. Nonlinear resistance sensors can be used in temperature sensors, gas sensors, and humidity sensors. In the description below, the nonlinear sensor is a resistor R with a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) NTC .

Abstract

An arrangement for linearizing a signal from a non-linear sensor is disclosed. The arrangement comprises: a non-linear sensor enabling to provide a signal having a characteristic that follows an exponential curve in response to a linear change in a phenomenon; an analog conversion unit to convert logarithmically the signal from the nonlinear sensor to obtain a converted signal. The conversion unit comprises a pn-junction and the conversion unit is arranged to measure the current through the non-linear sensor and to exchange said current into a current through the pn-junction, the current through the pn-junction having a linear relationship with the current through the non-linear sensor and the converted signal is the voltage across the pn-junction. In this way, a characteristic from a non- linear sensor like the resistance value of an NTC thermistor can be digitized over a large temperature range with high resolution at low cost with a low cost linear AD-converter to enable accurate measurement of temperature over a large temperature range.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a device for linearizing a nonlinear sensor. More precisely, a device for converting the output of a sensor whose output follows a nonlinear response curve into a linearized readout output. More specifically, the present invention relates to a device for linearizing NTC thermistors spanning a wide temperature range, ie -40°C to 200°C. Background technique [0002] In order to display the value of a physical parameter, such as temperature, pressure, etc., it is necessary to use a transducer that responds to this parameter by changing an electrically detectable characteristic. Such characteristics include temperature-sensitive resistance changes and thermocouple voltages. Most sensors exhibit significant nonlinearity in their output, that is, the sensor output voltage or current deviates significantly from a linear relationship with the input phenomenon being monitored. It is well known that thermistors and thermocoupl...
