Embodiment Construction

[0016] In various embodiments of the present disclosure, a thermostat is provided for curtailing the operation of the air conditioner during times when energy rates are relatively high. In one aspect of the present disclosure, various embodiments of thermostats can be connected to different systems, such as controller 26 for cooling electric water heater 24 or pool water heater (not shown) and space 20 air conditioner system 22 . exist figure 1 One embodiment of a thermostat for curtailing the operation of an air conditioner when energy price rates are high is shown generally at 100 . The thermostat 100 can sense the temperature of the space 20 and control the operation of the air conditioner 22 to cool the space 20 . Accordingly, thermostat 100 may include at least one temperature responsive device that periodically outputs a value indicative of the temperature of the space. The sensor may be any of a variety of sensor types and may include a crystal oscillator or other el...

Abstract

The invention relates to thermostat load reduction based on percentage change in energy price. A thermostat capable of receiving signals transmitted by a utility provider communicating a usage rate schedule or a request for a load curtailment period, and controlling one or more systems based on the information communicated by the utility. The thermostat changes the set point for each system to the stored predetermined control set point corresponding to the current usage rate schedule period or the curtailment mode period when requested. The thermostat is further capable of discontinuing operation of one or more systems for a minimum predetermined time period during following a request for a load curtailment period.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to thermostats for controlling the level of operation of more than one system to comply with time-of-use energy rates, and to thermostats capable of providing demand side management control to utility providers. [0002] Explanation Background technique [0003] This section provides background information related to the present disclosure which is not necessarily prior art. [0004] Today, as electricity demand increases, utility providers experience increased generation costs due to plugging in sub-"peak" power plants to supplement off-peak power plants. Many utility providers have therefore established real-time energy price rates to charge consumers variable rates that increase as the cost of generating electricity increases during peak demand periods. These rates vary based on a utility price rate schedule that establishes different usage price rates for specified periods of the day. Such energy price rates may al...
