Abstract

The present invention relates to a wind turbine blade with improved trailing edge bond. The wind turbine blade (16) ineludes a leading edge (24) and a trailing edge (26). The blade has an upper shell member (20) and a lower shell member (22), with eaeh of the shell members having a forward edge bonded at the leading edge of the blade and a rearward edge (19, 21). A rigid bond cap (50) is pre-formed into a designed size and shape of the trailing edge of the blade. The bond cap inciudes oppositely oriented leg members (52) bonded to the respective rearward edges of the shell members 80 as to be essentially flush with the upper and lower shell members. The rigid bond cap defmes at least a portion of the trailing edge of the blade and a primary external bonding bridge between the upper and lower shell members at the rearward edges.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the field of wind turbines, and more particularly to turbine blades having an improved bond configuration along the trailing edge bond line. Background technique [0002] Turbine blades are the main elements of wind turbines used to convert wind energy into electrical energy. The blades have an airfoil cross-sectional profile such that during operation air flows over the blades creating a pressure differential between the sides. Thus, a lift force directed from the pressure side towards the suction side acts on the blades. The lift force produces torque on the main rotor shaft, which is geared to a generator for producing electricity. [0003] Turbine blades typically consist of an upper (suction side) shell and a lower (pressure side) shell joined together at a join line along the trailing and leading edges of the blade. Bond lines are typically formed by applying a suitable bonding glue or compound along ...
