Embodiment Construction

[0022] The following example embodiments and aspects thereof are described in conjunction with devices, methods, and systems that are intended as illustrative examples and not limiting in scope.

[0023] figure 1An example server cooling system is shown including side walls 100 , floor 102 , roof 104 , enclosure 106 , and server racks 108 . The sidewalls 100 , the floor 102 and the top 104 define an interior space 118 . Ground 102 may or may not be a raised sub-floor. There may be a valve opening 110 in the top 104 and a valve opening 114 in the side wall 100 . The valve openings may be connected to a control system operable to selectively open or close the respective valve openings. The fence 106 may have frames, panels, doors, and server rack ports. Server rack ports are openings in enclosure wall 106 that may be connected to one or more server racks 108 . Enclosing wall 106 , which may be made of various materials, such as steel, composite or carbon, forms an outer sh...

Abstract

Apparatuses, methods, and systems directed to an integrated building based air handler for efficient cooling of data centers. Some embodiments of the invention allow encapsulation of hot rows through an enclosure and allow one or more cooling fans mounted internally within the rack-mounted units to draw cold air to cool the rack mounted units installed in the racks and eject heated air to the enclosure. In other embodiments, the systems disclosed can be used to introduce external air to cool the servers. In some embodiments, in addition to the hot row enclosures, the system encapsulates cold rows through cold row enclosures. The cooling fans of the rack mounted units draw cold air from the cold row enclosures to cool the units and eject heated air to the hot row enclosure. In some other embodiments, a control system is used to selectively utilize natural cool air to cool the servers. When external air is not suitable for cooling purposes, the control system re-circulates the heated air from the hot row enclosures and one or more evaporative coolers are used to cool the heated air.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to cooling systems for data centers. Background technique [0002] The rapid growth of Internet services such as web email, web search, web site hosting, and web video sharing has created ever-increasing demands on the computing and storage capabilities of servers in data centers. While the performance of servers continues to increase, so does the energy consumption of servers (even with efforts in low power design of integrated circuits). For example, one of the most widely used server processors, AMD's Opteron processor, runs at up to 95 watts. Intel's Xeon server processors run between 110 and 165 watts. However, the processor is only a part of the server; other parts of the server, such as storage, consume additional power. [0003] Servers are typically placed in racks in a data center. Various physical structures exist for racks. A typical rack structure includes mounting rails to which multiple units ...
