Embodiment Construction

[0027] figure 1is a simplified top view of an autostereoscopic display 2 comprising a display panel 4 with a plurality of pixels 6 and a parallax barrier comprising an e-ink plane 8 with a plurality of e-ink cells 10 . The inner space 12 of each electronic ink unit 10 is filled with electronic ink particles (e-ink particles) that selectively transmit light generated by the display panel 4 (ie, generated by each pixel 6 of the display panel 4 ). The electronic ink particles are selectively permeable because the directions of emitted light, exemplified by arrows for the four pixels 6 of the display panel 4 , can be adjusted. If the light from the display panel 4 is completely blocked, the inclination angle of the electronic ink particles will be zero. At an inclination angle of 90°, light is transmitted in a direction perpendicular to the light emitting surface of the display panel 4 . The inclination angle of the electronic ink particles located in the inner space 12 of the e...

Abstract

An autostereoscopic display, comprising a display panel, a parallax barrier that is arranged on a viewing side of the display panel, wherein the parallax barrier comprises a first e-ink plane having a plurality of e-ink particles that are pivotable around a tilt axis by a tilting angle and wherein the e-ink particles are light-transmissive in a first direction and opaque in a second direction, and a control unit that is configured to tilt the e-ink particles so as to set the e-ink particles to a common tilting angle and to synchronize a reproduction of a picture by the display panel and the tilt of the e-ink particles so as to provide a stereoscopic view to a user.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to an autostereoscopic display comprising a display panel and a parallax barrier, and further to a method of operating the autostereoscopic display. Background technique [0002] Stereoscopic display of 3D images or 3D movies needs to present different images to the left and right eyes of a viewer. The straightforward solution used in most 3D cinemas today is polarized glasses and polarized projection of stereoscopic image pairs. However, having to wear glasses while watching a movie means an uncomfortable viewing experience for many customers. Especially for home entertainment, what is needed is a stereoscopic display that provides the viewer with a stereoscopic view without wearing any auxiliary parts like eg shutters or polarized glasses. Typically, stereoscopic 3D displays without accessories use a parallax barrier to provide different images to the viewer's left and right eyes. Such barriers are usually rigid. Therefore, ...
