Embodiment Construction

[0054] figure 1 A block diagram of an exemplary electricity meter 10 is shown. In the exemplary embodiment, electricity meter 10 includes a sensor device 12 , a conductor 14 , and a meter control board 17 coupled to sensor device 12 . Conductors 14 may include bus bars, stranded wires, solid wires, cables, or other suitable conductors to transmit power from a power source to power consumers. Power sources may include, without limitation, electrical grids and / or generator systems, such as gas turbine engines, hydroelectric turbines, wind turbines, solar panels, and / or other suitable power generation and / or transmission systems. The power source may also include a smart grid in communication with the meter control board 17 . Customers may include, without limitation, residential customers, commercial customers, and / or any other electricity customer of any class. Sensor device 12 is coupled to conductor 14 to sense current flowing through conductor 14 . The sensor device 12 p...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a sensor device and method for sensing current through a conductor. In particular, sensor devices and related methods are disclosed. An exemplary sensor device (12) includes a Rogowski coil (104) defining an aperture (110) and a dielectric material (108) at least partially enclosing the Rogowski coil. The dielectric material has a dielectric constant of at least about 3.5. The dielectric material is configured such that when the conductor (14) is at least partially inserted into the aperture, at least a portion of the dielectric material is located between the Rogowski coil and the conductor.

Description

technical field [0001] The field of the invention relates generally to sensor devices and methods, and more specifically, to sensing electrical current through a conductor. Background technique [0002] At least some known watt-hour meters (or utility meters) are used to measure power supplied from a power source to consumers. In order to be able to accurately measure the amount of energy supplied to the user, the electricity meter often includes one or more sensor devices to sense the current flowing through the conductors between the power source and the user. When included in a watt-hour meter, the sensor device is intended to work precisely within the voltage and / or current ranges of operation. [0003] Various known current sensor arrangements are used in electricity meters. For example, at least some known transformer-type sensor devices include a magnetic core around which magnet wire is wound to sense current flowing through a conductor. However, it is generally k...
