Embodiment Construction

[0050] Before a femoral sizing guide according to one embodiment of the present invention can be used, the distal end of the femur must undergo an initial resection to remove the distal portion of the femur to create a surface transverse to the longitudinal axis of the femur. The femoral sizing guide is arranged to allow alignment holes to be drilled in the resected surface or to seat guide pins extending from the resected surface. Specifically, the femoral sizing guide according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a drill pilot hole that allows drilling in the resected surface of the bone or allows a guide pin to be inserted directly into the bone through the drill guide. middle. Alignment holes or guide pins are used to position the cutting block on the surface of the bone for a shaped resection of the femoral end. Thus, the position of the alignment holes / guide pins relative to the ankle / anterior cortex on the femoral sizing guide determined by the drill gui...

Abstract

A femoral sizing guide comprises a body (6), a superstructure (40) and a stylus (53). The body (6) is arranged to rest against a resected femoral surface and has first and second feet (12) arranged to extend underneath respective posterior condyles and rest against posterior condylar surfaces of the femur. The superstructure (40) is coupled to the body (6) and is arranged to slide parallel to the resected femoral surface towards and away from the feet (12). The stylus (53) is coupled to the superstructure (40) and arranged such that when the body (6) rests against the resected femoral surface a tip (60) of the stylus (53) extends over the femur such that sliding the superstructure (40) towards the feet (12) causes the stylus tip (60) to contact the anterior cortex of the femur. The superstructure (40) further comprises a first guide hole (52) defining a first alignment axis extending into the resected femoral surface at a predetermined distance from the level of the stylus tip (60) in the plane of the resected femoral surface. The body (6) defines a second guide hole (22) defining a second alignment axis extending into the resected femoral surface at a predetermined distance from the feet (12), the distance between the first and second guide holes (52, 22) varying as the superstructure (40) slides relative to the body (6).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to femur sizing guides. Specifically, embodiments of the present invention relate to a femoral sizing guide for accurately positioning a cutting block on a resected distal portion of a femur so as to be positioned for preparing the end of the femur to receive a prosthetic implant cutting plane. The invention also relates to methods of using the femoral sizing guide. Background technique [0002] During a patient's lifetime, a patient may need to undergo joint replacement surgery due to, for example, disease or trauma. Joint replacement or arthroplasty may involve the use of a prosthesis implanted in one of the patient's bones. [0003] During the performance of a joint replacement, it is often important to provide the corrective surgeon with a degree of flexibility in the selection of the correct size of the prosthesis. In particular, the anatomy of the bone into which the prosthesis is to be implanted may va...
