Abstract

Medication misdosing occurs frequently in hospital, home, and pharmacy settings. Medication verification and dispensing systems can provide protection against the above-mentioned misdosing of medications. The apparatus includes a catheter that receives the drug and an imaging device adjacent to the catheter that acquires images of the drug. Imaging devices and light sources are directed to capture images that reveal the markings, color, size, shape, etc. of the drug. The verification system uses the image's signature to identify the drug, or compares the image to a reference image to identify the drug and compares the image to the patient's prescription record to ensure it is the correct drug, dosage, amount, timing, etc. for administration. If the medication is correct, it is dispensed into a dispensing container that locks the medication within it, but opens when it recognizes the unique patient identifier worn by the patient who is the correct recipient of the medication.
