[0080] In electrical circuits, batteries and capacitors are used to provide power to other components. However these power supplies work in completely different ways. Batteries use electrochemical reactions to generate electricity. They consist of two electrical terminals (electrodes) separated by an electrolyte. At the negative electrode (anode), an oxidation reaction occurs to produce electrons. These electrons then flow around the external circuit from the anode to the positive electrode (cathode) causing a reduction reaction to take place at the cathode. Oxidation and reduction reactions can continue until complete conversion of the reactants. Importantly though, electrochemical reactions cannot occur unless electrons can flow from the anode to the cathode via an external circuit. This allows the battery to store power for long periods of time.
