Embodiment 1

[0112] Embodiment 1 is a method for detecting the presence or absence of a target microorganism, comprising:

[0113] supply:

[0114]a culture device comprising a culture medium containing ingredients selected to promote growth of predetermined indicator microorganisms;

[0115] a detection article comprising a first indicator system selected to detect a target microorganism; and

[0116] sample;

[0117] inoculating the culture device with the sample;

[0118] incubating said inoculated culture device for a period of time sufficient to allow growth of said indicator microorganism;

[0119] observing the culture device for at least one indication indicating the presence of microorganisms;

[0120] contacting the medium of the incubated culture device with the test article; and

[0121] The culture device contacted with the article is observed to detect a transition of the first indicator system from the first state to the second state.

Embodiment 2

[0122] Embodiment 2 is the method of embodiment 1, wherein if there is a transition of the first indicator system from the first state to the second state, the presence of at least one target microorganism is indicated.

Embodiment 3

[0123] Embodiment 3 is the method of embodiment 1, wherein the absence of a transition of the first indicator system from the first state to the second state indicates the presence of at least one target microorganism.

Abstract

The invention discloses a method for detecting target microorganisms. The method includes providing a culture device comprising a selective medium and a detection article comprising a first indicator system. The selective medium promotes the growth of indicator microorganisms. When an indicator microorganism is detected in a sample contacted with the medium, the detection article is contacted with the medium to detect the target microorganism.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This patent application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 428,722, filed December 30, 2010, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] Testing samples of entire foods, beverages, and water for pathogenic microorganisms may be impractical both because of the high cost and because pathogenic microorganisms are rarely present in, for example, properly processed foods. Therefore, tests for the presence of indicator microorganisms are routinely used to test food and water for the possibility of contamination with human pathogens. The presence of one or more indicator microorganisms may indicate, for example, fecal contamination, and may indicate the possible presence of pathogenic microorganisms. [0004] Escherichia coli (coliform bacteria) represents an example of an indicator microorganism. Coliforms include several genera (eg, Citrobacter, Enter...
