Problems solved by technology

[0004] Typically, however, significant losses are experienced during signal transfer from electronic devices disposed at or near a user due to absorption of electromagnetic radiation by the human body
This might be overcome by increasing the signal energy, however, this results in increased power consumption which is often undesirable
Also, for small electronic devices located at or near the user, such as wearable electronic devices, limited power sources and increased power consumption for transmitting wireless signals are not a viable solution

Abstract

The invention relates to an antenna system for a wearable computing device. The antenna system for a wireless body area network is provided. The antenna system comprises a transceiver for wireless data communication interconnected with an antenna for emission and reception of an electromagnetic field. The antenna comprises an electrically conductive material, and a slot provided in the electrically conductive material and extending in a plane being substantially parallel with a user body when the antenna system is worn in its operational position by a user. The slot is configured to cause emission of an electromagnetic field upon excitation. The slot may form a resonant structure. The electromagnetic field emitted by the antenna is configured to propagate along the surface of a body of a user with its electrical field substantially orthogonal to the surface of a body of a user. The antenna system may be configured to enable communication between at least two wearable computing devices.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to the field of antennas, and more particularly to antennas for use at or near a user's body, such as antennas for providing wireless communications. Background technique [0002] An increasing number of electronic devices are used that are placed on, in, or near users and their bodies. Typically, communication between these electronic devices or from these electronic devices to devices arranged external to the user is provided for example using a body area network, a wireless body area network or a wearable body area network. The field of body area networks is being developed, eg, to allow inexpensive and continuous health monitoring. Monitoring can include real-time updates of medical records via the Internet, and monitoring can allow early detection of medical conditions for monitoring patient health, for example by implanting biosensors in the human body to collect various physiological changes. Furthermore, other e...
