Embodiment 1

[0106] In Nozzle No. 1, the five outlet nozzles were constructed from 30 gauge (G) stainless steel tubing (approximately 0.0069 inch round hole and approximately 5mm in length) mounted within 20G stainless steel tubing. The 30G tubes fit tightly and form a symmetrical pentagonal arrangement arranged symmetrically in a circle. All non-bore gaps between the individual 30G tubes were filled. The distal end of the nozzle is processed so that all tubes are flush and of equal length. The opening treatment is cleaned and squared.

Embodiment 2

[0108] Nozzle #2 was constructed with 11 outlets consisting of 5 pieces of 25(G) stainless steel tubing (approximately 0.011 inch round hole and approximately 5 mm in length) mounted within 18G stainless steel tubing for a tight fit. No gaps are filled between the 25G tube and the 15G tube, so the nozzle configuration has 5 additional ports (approximately triangular in shape), nozzle ports surrounding the 5 circular ports. In addition, a generally pentagonal central void exists at the very center where a dose can be delivered. The distal end of the nozzle is processed so that all tubes are flush and of equal length. The opening treatment is cleaned and squared.

[0109] Such as Figure 22 As shown, Nozzle #3 was constructed with 6 outlets consisting of 3 pieces of 23G stainless steel pipe assembled into a 15G stainless steel pipe. These tubes are a tight fit and no glue or fillers are used. In addition to the three nozzle ports of the 23G tube, there are three additional a...

Embodiment 3

[0114] Nozzle No. 5 had four outlets of 30G stainless steel pipe in a linear arrangement within a modified 16G stainless steel pipe. Set the 30G tube by lightly pressing the 16G tube and fill any gaps between the 30G and 16G tubes with filler. The distal end of the nozzle is processed so that all tubes are flush and of equal length. The opening treatment is cleaned and squared.

Abstract

The present invention provides a nozzle for delivering a mixture of an aerosol propellant and a pharmaceutical formulation. The nozzle includes a drug inlet configured to receive a mixture of an aerosolized propellant and an intranasal dosage form. The inlet is provided at the proximal end. A nozzle body is fixed to the drug inlet. Two or more channels are provided within the body. Two or more orifices are provided at the distal end of the nozzle.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Serial No. 61 / 484,048, filed May 9, 2011, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety. [0003] Statement on Government Rights and Interests [0004] This invention was made with US Government support under US Army SBIR Grant No. W81XWH-10-C-0238. The government may have certain rights in this application. [0005] Background of the invention [0006] Existing nasal drug delivery devices perform poorly at penetrating the nasal cavity to deposit drug onto the medial turbinate for systemic drug delivery. Such existing devices also have deficiencies in delivering drugs to the upper nasal cavity for direct nose-to-brain delivery. Existing intranasal drug delivery devices produce a broad jet that is insufficient to deliver the compound deep into the nasal cavity. [0007] Summary of the invention [0008] In one embodiment, a nozzle is describe...
