Problems solved by technology

Additional batteries or supercapacitors add mass and increase package size for each FOS load; add cost if sized to support each FOS load individually; and do not support the vehicle's entire electrical system or controller, Instead, only those FOS loads to which an additional battery or supercap is assigned are supported

Embodiment Construction

[0084] Referring now to the drawings, in which the views are for purposes of describing certain exemplary embodiments only and not for purposes of limitation, figure 1 An exemplary fail-safe power system (FOPS) 100 according to the present disclosure is shown, which includes two parallel power distribution paths, each powered by an independent power source, for splitting to the two parallel power distribution paths critical load supply power. The FOPS 100 includes a first power source 11 and a second power source 12 . The term "independent power supply" may refer to a power supply that has the ability to independently provide power during abnormal conditions such as an electrical failure within the FOPS. The first independent power supply 11 includes a first energy storage device (ESD), such as a 12V battery or a supercapacitor, both of which have an optional DC-DC converter, and the first independent power supply passes through the first isolation switch 1 via The first pow...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a failover power system having multiple energy storage devices. In particular, there is provided a method for operating a fail-run electrical system of a vehicle comprising monitoring voltage on first or second electrical distribution paths arranged in parallel. Each path includes respective first and second isolating switches which, when operating in a closed state, are effective to power the respective path via a respective capacity storage device for powering the Each of these supplies electrical power to one or more loads. A third disconnect switch controllably operated between an open state and a closed state is monitored. A closed state of the third disconnector connects the paths, and an open state of the third disconnector disconnects the connections between the paths. When a predetermined mode of operation requiring fault operating power is enabled, the third isolating switch is controlled to an open circuit state when at least one of said voltages monitored violates a reference voltage, and none of said voltages monitored violates said When the reference voltage is used, the third isolating switch is controlled to a closed state.
