Problems solved by technology

If the sensor was writing to memory when a power loss or reset occurred, information may still be written to memory, but that information may be incomplete or corrupted
Even if the sensor is able to retain the information after a power interruption (such as by using an external capacitor as the power source), the sensor cannot know that the information is unreliable or uncorrupted
Using that information may result in reduced performance or errors in the sensor, which is not desired for obvious reasons

Embodiment Construction

[0017] Embodiments relate to reliably storing information in sensors or other devices. In one embodiment, the information storage circuit includes separate, redundant memory portions and error detection circuitry. The circuitry is operable in cooperation with a memory write program that utilizes a validity bit and sequentially writes to one or the other of the redundant memory portions so that at least one of the memory portions has valid and itself identifiable data .

[0018] see figure 1 , depicts a block diagram of the apparatus 100. In general, device 100 is a functional device having operational circuitry 102 for performing its function(s). Operating circuitry 102 may include a microcontroller and other circuitry necessary for the general operation of device 100 . For example, in an embodiment apparatus 100 may include a sensor, such as a magnetic field sensor, a current sensor, a temperature sensor, an acceleration sensor, or some other type of sensor, wherein opera...

Abstract

The present invention relates to integrated circuits and systems and methods for storing information. The integrated circuit includes: a first memory portion configured to store information and a validity bit; a second memory portion configured to store information and a validity bit; and circuitry including a first error detection circuit coupled to the first memory portion, coupled to A second error detection circuit coupled to the second memory portion, and a reset circuit coupled to both the first and second memory portions. The method includes: setting a validity bit of the first memory portion to a first value; writing data to the first memory portion; setting a validity bit of the first memory portion to a second value; setting a valid bit of the second memory portion to setting a status bit to a first value; writing data to a second memory portion; and setting a validity bit of the second memory portion to a second value.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to integrated circuits and more particularly to storage of calibration and other information by integrated circuit sensor devices. Background technique [0002] Sensor devices often need to store information or data internally for use by the sensor at a particular time or when a particular event occurs. For example, magnetic field sensors often generate and store calibration information for use at startup or some other time. [0003] However, this stored information may be lost if the sensor device experiences a reset event or loses power. Returning to the example of magnetic field sensors, these sensors are often used in automotive applications such as fuel injection and other engine systems where they may be exposed to significant electromagnetic interference, voltage spikes associated with engine starting and stopping or other sources, or Other power outages. These interruptions may cause the supply line vo...
