Embodiment Construction

[0048] The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for characterizing and assessing water based on the use of cell-based biosensors.

[0049] Biological systems for characterizing water according to the present disclosure include biosensors. Such biosensors comprise cells, which may exist in a variety of forms including, but not limited to, single cells, cell cultures, unicellular organisms, microbiomes, multicellular organisms, biological samples collected from or derived from such organisms , such as organs, tissue samples, and tissue cultures. These cells can be endogenous cells, exogenously engineered cells or synthetic cells. The cells may be of any suitable type and may include human cells, animal cell (eg porcine, rodent, canine, bovine, sheep and / or equine) clones, plant cells, and the like. The cells may be blood cells, cultured cells, biopsied cells, or cells fixed with preservatives or bound to a matrix. The cells may be nucleated, such as leukocytes or...

Abstract

A method of determining water quality of a water sample, comprising exposing the water sample to a test cell system; generating at least one profile of ensuing changes in activities of transcription factors in said test cell system in response to said exposing; and determining from the generated at least one profile the water quality of the water sample. Computer systems and kits for carrying out the water quality determination of water specimens are also described, in which water quality can be readily and accurately determined by transcription factor activity analysis.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 532,122, filed September 8, 2011, in the name of Sergei S. Makarov, is hereby called upon under 35 U.S.C. § 119 (35 U.S.C. 119)—"For Determining Systems and Methods for Biological Contaminants" - Interests. The disclosure of this US Provisional Patent Application is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety for all purposes. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to water assays and systems and methods for characterizing water with respect to biological contaminants in water. Background technique [0004] In recent years, there has been increasing concern about the quality of water used for agricultural consumption, industrial consumption and consumer consumption. This is due to the growing awareness of the ingress of pollutants due to deficiencies in wastewater treatment such as municipal wastewater treatment plants and industrial wastewater abatemen...
