Embodiment Construction

[0028] figure 1 is an illustration of a prior art projection system 100 . Projection system 100 includes light source 105 that provides (eg, transmits) light 110 along optical path 115 . According to some embodiments, light source 105 includes a lamp, such as a xenon lamp, and a parabolic director. According to some embodiments, light source 105 includes a laser module. The light 110 is transmitted to an intervening optical element 120 . Intermediary optical element 120 manipulates light 110 to produce light cones 125a, 125b, 125c, collectively referred to as light cones 125, and indicated simply as arrows. Intermediary optics 120 may include, one or more integrated rods, prisms, alternate lenses, and mirrors. It will be appreciated that light ray 110 includes light from light cones 125a, 125b, and 125c. In other words, light cones 125a , 125b , and 125c are portions or subsets of light 110 . It will be appreciated that "manipulating light" (and equivalents) may include,...

Abstract

A system and method for generating high dynamic range images using light-controlled zone switching, the system comprising: a light source for providing light along an optical path. A spatial light modulator is used to direct part of the light to the optical path in the off state and the on state to generate an image, and the spatial light modulator has a plurality of illumination areas corresponding to the image. Dynamic range optical elements ordered on the optical path for manipulating at least some of the light from a first subset of the plurality of illumination areas to a second subset of the plurality of illumination areas to enhance the image. Altering the dwell time of one or more ordered optical elements to manipulate light.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a projection system, in particular to a system and method for generating high dynamic range images by using light-controlled region switching. Background technique [0002] Existing projection systems require that the illumination of the spatial light modulator is the same across the imaging surface of the spatial light modulator. In other words, these systems require that the amount of light received by each pixel of the SLM be equal so that the illumination of the brightest areas is limited by the total illumination of the SLM mirrors. This may result in an image that is not a true reproduction of the original or desired image, especially if the original or desired image constitutes an image with a high dynamic range. Contents of the invention [0003] According to one implementation, there is provided a system for generating a high dynamic range image comprising: a light source providing light along an optical pat...
