Problems solved by technology

There is always a risk of infection following any surgical procedure in which the protective barrier of the skin is breached, however when permanent surgical implants such as intramedullary nails or bone plates remain in the body, the generation of contaminating bacteria necessary for infection volume is significantly reduced

Embodiment Construction

[0058] Certain terms used in the following description are only for convenience and not restrictive. The terms "distal" and "proximal" refer to directions toward and away from the patient's body, respectively. The terms "front side", "rear side", "right side", "left side", "lower side", and "upper side" designate directions in the drawings, which are used as reference. The words "front", "rear", "upper", "lower", and related words and / or phrases designate illustrative positions and orientations in the human body, which are used as reference and are not limiting. The term includes the words listed above, their derivatives and words with similar meanings. In addition, a three-dimensional coordinate system is used to describe the position and orientation of parts of the implant. The coordinate system includes a longitudinal direction L, a lateral direction A, and a lateral direction T, wherein each of the directions is perpendicular to the other two directions.

Abstract

The present application discloses embodiments related to an implant and a method of forming an implant configured to treat a fractured bone. The implant can include a body having a proximal end, a distal end, and an outer surface extending from the proximal end to the distal end, wherein the body defines a central axis extending from the proximal end to the distal end; and a high tensile strand positioned adjacent the body such that at least a portion of the strand extends at least partially along the outer surface of the body in a direction substantially parallel with the central axis, and wherein the strand is loaded with an active agent.

Description

[0001] Cross reference to related patent applications [0002] This patent application claims the rights and interests of US provisional patent application 61 / 599,568 filed on February 16, 2012, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates generally to orthopedics. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to systems and methods for treating fractured bone. Background technique [0004] Infections associated with orthopedic implants are a potentially serious complication of orthopedic trauma surgery, which usually requires long-term systemic antibiotic treatment, reoperation, and hardware removal. There is always a risk of infection after any surgical operation in which the protective barrier of the skin is broken, but when permanent surgical implants such as intramedullary nails or bone plates remain in the body, the contaminating bacteria necessary for infection are produced The amount is significantly...
