Embodiment 1

[0083] Broiler chicks were fed zilpaterol daily at 1 ppm from 8 days to 56 days of age. Relatively small performance responses were observed with zilpaterol. In this study, no significant performance gains were reported, namely average daily gain (ADG) of 1.3-2.6% and feed efficiency (FE) of 0.6%-1.9%. However, when Zipateroda was fed daily at 1 ppm for 7 weeks, carcass was significantly (P<0.01) 2% higher compared to the control.

[0085] Broiler chickens were fed zilpaterol hydrochloride in a 42-day groundspheric study to evaluate the performance response of zilpaterol compared to a non-medicated control group. Six zilpaterol treatment groups consisted of three concentration levels (1, 3 and 5 ppm) and two feeding durations (7 and 14 days) and were administered in the feed and a non-medicated control group. A total of 1,680 broiler chicks were divided by sex into 56 pens, 30 birds / pen and 4 pens / sex / group (240 birds / group). 7-day zilpaterol treatment started at age 35 days and continued until age 42 days. The 14-day zilpaterol treatment started at age 28 days and continued until age 42 days. There were no significant differences in mean pre-treatment body weight between all groups (6 zilpaterol-treated and control groups).

[0120] Zipaterol hydrochloride was fed to broiler chickens in the 42-day ground circle study as described above in Example 2, except for the following. There were zilpaterol treatment groups at seven concentration levels (0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 ppm) and three feeding durations (7, 14 or 21 days). Zipaterol was administered in the feed, except for a control group that did not contain the drug. Zipaterol-treated groups started feeding at 21, 28 or 35 days of age. On day 21, feeding zilpaterol occurred for 21 or 14 days. On day 28, feeding with zilpaterol occurred for 14 or 7 days. Finally, on day 35, feeding zilpaterol begins for 7 days or longer if desired for larger birds to target sell-off weight. Within each feeding group, there were seven subgroups, one for each concentration level. For each group / subgroup, body weight and other performance characteristics were measured at the end of the feeding period as specified.
