Abstract

The present disclosure provides a hybrid vehicle. A method for controlling a hybrid vehicle having an engine includes automatically stopping the engine while towing in response to a vehicle power demand falling below a current available electrical power, and when the vehicle power demand falls below the current available electrical power for a first excursion to start the engine automatically. A hybrid vehicle comprising: an engine; an electric machine; a trailer hitch; a controller configured to command the engine to start at a torque offset below an engine torque-on schedule for an untowed vehicle in response to the vehicle being towed, wherein the Torque offset is based on vehicle load. A method for controlling a hybrid vehicle having a trailer hitch includes: detecting that the trailer hitch is in use; commanding an engine stop; to command the engine to start.
