Embodiment Construction

[0014] The exemplary embodiment recognizes that currently only a few verified methods can be used to control available free Wi-Fi access. As long as the mobile device can detect the Wi-Fi network, that is, if the mobile device is within the effective range of the transceiver of the wireless access point, and given proper authentication, the device can connect to the Wi-Fi network.

[0015] In addition, the exemplary embodiment recognizes that the entity that provides free Wi-Fi access does so in order to realize some commercial revenue from the free service or to provide some public services. The exemplary embodiment recognizes that the entity's purpose of allowing free Wi-Fi access is generally adversely affected by two factors: first, the inability to control unintentional connections by non-customers without administrative costs; and second, due to such unintentional Wi-Fi bandwidth saturation caused by the connection.

[0016] Therefore, the exemplary embodiments recognize tha...

Abstract

A method for subsidizing wireless services in geo-fenced zones is provided in the illustrative embodiments. A geo-fenced zone is configured, the geo-fenced zone comprising a boundary defined by a set of fixed points in space. A subsidized pricing is configured for the wireless service when the wireless service is consumed by a mobile device within the geo-fenced zone, forming a subsidized wireless service. The mobile device is detected in the geo-fenced zone. The mobile device is provided the subsidized wireless service. A billing entry is applied to an account associated with the mobile device, wherein the billing entry charges the account a subsidized amount corresponding to a measured amount of subsidized wireless service used by the mobile device while the mobile device remains within the geo-fenced zone.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to methods, systems and computer program products for providing wireless services to mobile devices. More specifically, the present invention relates to methods, systems and computer program products for subsidizing wireless services in geo-fenced areas. Background technique [0002] Mobile devices (such as portable computers, tablet computers, smart phones, digital book readers) and many such devices connect to the Internet using various modes of wireless communication. Wireless broadband such as 3G or 4G data services through a wireless service provider's network and Wi-Fi networks from wireless access points are the two most commonly used wireless methods for connecting to the Internet from mobile devices. [0003] When the mobile device is within the range of the Wi-Fi access point device, many places provide free Wi-Fi access to the mobile device. For example, some coffee shops offer their customers free use of t...
