Problems solved by technology

[0006] A disadvantage of known modular applicators is that they do not provide sufficient certainty of orientation to the medical professional in question
Specifically, stacks of segments with many preselected paths for radioactive sources may be accidentally rotated about a central axis, which may lead to dose delivery errors

Embodiment Construction

[0036] Detailed description of the drawings

[0037] Figure 1a An embodiment of a modular applicator 10 equipped with a securing mechanism in the form of a slot is presented in a schematic manner. In this embodiment the central element comprises two source guides (guide) 1a, 1b, on which a fastening mechanism with a core 4 is fastened. The guides 1a, 1b are substantially tubular. The securing mechanism includes one or more surfaces suitably formed to enable attachment of peripheral components. For example, the surface may have the shape of guides (not shown) arranged to cooperate with mounting guides of peripheral elements. In this way, peripheral elements can slide on the fixing mechanism 4 . The guides can have the shape of grooves or ribs. In addition, peripheral elements may be attached to the core 4 by eg snap fits, sealing rings or bayonet-fit connectors.

[0038] The applicator 10 also includes two ovoids 2a, 2b and an inter-uterine tube 3 . The applicator 10 may...

Abstract

A modular applicator for enabling a brachytherapy treatment comprising a central element and one or more of peripheral elements, wherein the central element is adapted with a fixation mechanism having a core for affixing the said peripheral elements thereto, wherein the fixation mechanism prevents a rotational displacement of the peripheral elements attached to the core of the fixation element with respect to the central element.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a modular applicator for brachytherapy. Background technique [0002] Cancer, the incidence of which has increased in the last decade of the 20th century, requires enormous efforts by medical professionals in terms of early diagnosis, logistics and availability of appropriate treatment. However, it is understandable that over 1.3 million new (skin) cancers are diagnosed each year and are growing at a rate of about 5% per year. [0003] Nonproliferative cancers, which are essentially superficial lesions, can be treated in different ways. First, it is conceivable to perform surgery. However, this technique can be disadvantageous due to long waiting lists and complications related to post-treatment care. In addition, there may be additional risks due to the traumatic nature of infection from surgically contaminated wounds. Second, external exposure using electron or electromagnetic radiation can be envisaged. Such a t...
