Problems solved by technology

Changes in the position of the leading edge caused by changes in the angular orientation of the diffuser vanes can cause premature separation of the working fluid flow from the surface of the diffuser vanes, thus reducing the effectiveness of the variable diffuser vanes in regulating the performance of the compressor unit. sex

Embodiment Construction

[0014] Broadly speaking, the following discussion focuses on improvements in diffuser and diffuser assembly design to achieve good performance in compressor installations, eg, centrifugal compressors. In one aspect, these improvements address issues due to reorientation of the angular position of the diffuser vanes within the diffuser assembly. As described below, embodiments of the proposed diffuser assembly allow the trailing edge to be positioned as desired, but maintain the leading edge on the diffuser vane relative to the flow direction of the working fluid flowing through the diffuser vane in the diffuser assembly orientation.

[0015] figure 1 A perspective view of diffuser vane 100 is shown. The diffuser vane 100 has a vane body 102 with a leading edge 104 and a trailing edge 106 . Chord length L defines the straight-line distance between leading edge 104 and trailing edge 106 . The vane body 102 has an aerodynamic profile (eg, an airfoil) with an angle of attack r...

Abstract

Embodiments of a diffuser assembly incorporate a diffuser vane with a trailing edge that changes position to improve flow performance of a compressor device. In one embodiment, the trailing edge rotates about the leading edge. This configuration maintains the position of the leading edge on the diffuser vanes relative to the orientation of the working fluid.

Description

Background technique [0001] The subject matter disclosed herein relates to compressor devices (eg, centrifugal compressors), and in particular to diffusers and diffuser vanes for compressor devices. [0002] Compressor devices (eg, centrifugal compressors) use a diffuser assembly to convert the kinetic energy of a working fluid into static pressure by slowing the velocity of the working fluid through a region of expanded volume. Examples of diffuser assemblies typically use several diffuser vanes in an axial arrangement around the impeller. The design (eg, shape and size) of the diffuser vane, combined with the preferred orientation of the leading and trailing edges of the diffuser vane relative to the flow of the working fluid, generally determines how the diffuser vane is attached in the diffuser assembly. [0003] To incorporate further refinement and flexibility into the design, some examples of diffuser assemblies incorporate variable diffuser vanes. These types of diff...
