The method comprises the following steps that in a normal operating condition of an axle temperature sensor, training data of the axle temperature sensor is acquired; pretreatment is performed on the training data so that time of the training data is synchronous and the training data is low-noise and smooth and steady; according to the training data, a principal component analysis method is used to establish a principal component model and generate a square prediction error control limit; real-time monitoring is performed and measurement data of the axle temperature sensor is acquired; pretreatment is performed on the measurement data; according to the measurement data, the principal component analysis method is used to generate square prediction error statistics; whether the square prediction error statistics is less than or equal to the square prediction error control limit is determined; if the square prediction error statistics is less than or equal to the square prediction error control limit, the axle temperature sensor works normally; if the square prediction error statistics is greater than the square prediction error control limit, the axle temperature sensor has a fault and fault alarm is performed.
