Embodiment Construction

[0046] will now refer to Figure 1a and 1b to describe an example of a multimode filter.

[0047] The basis of the invention is the use of a specific type of coupling aperture to couple signals into and out of a multimode resonator while simultaneously exciting two or more modes within (or coupling energy from) the resonator.

[0048] In this example, filter 100 includes a resonator body 110 encapsulated in a metallization layer (which is not shown for clarity). At least two vias are formed in the metallization layer: an in-coupling via 120 and an out-coupling via 130 . These small holes consist of the absence of metallization, where the rest of the resonator body is essentially encapsulated in its metallization layer. Apertures 120 and 130 may be formed, for example, by chemically or mechanically etching metallisation around resonator body 110 to remove the metallisation and thereby form one or more apertures. Other means may also be used to form the aperture or apertures, ...

Abstract

A multi-mode cavity filter, comprising: at least one dielectric resonator body incorporating a piece of dielectric material, the piece of dielectric material having a shape such that it can support at least a first resonant mode and at least a second substantially degenerate resonant mode; a layer of conductive material in contact with and covering the dielectric resonator body; and a coupling mechanism comprising at least one aperture in the layer of conductive material for at least one of inputting signals to the dielectric resonator body and outputting signals from the dielectric resonator body, the at least one aperture being arranged for at least one of directly coupling signals to the first resonant mode and the second substantially degenerate resonant mode in parallel, and directly coupling signals from the first resonant mode and the second substantially degenerate resonant mode in parallel.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to filters and in particular to multimode filters comprising resonator bodies for use eg in frequency division duplexers for telecommunication applications. Background technique [0002] Reference in this specification to any prior publication (or information derived therefrom) or known material is not and should not be construed as such prior publication (or information derived therefrom) or known material constitutes An acknowledgment or permission or implication of any kind that is part of the common general knowledge in the field to which the description relates. [0003] All physical filters essentially consist of many energy storing resonant structures with paths for energy flow between the various resonators and between the resonators and the input / output ports. The physical implementation of the resonators and the way they are interconnected will differ for the different types, but the same basic concept applies t...
