A series of TPO substrates (Metaform 7200 from Mytex Polymers), acrylic cap stock (Solarkote H300 from Arkema Inc.), and different tie layers as described in Table 1 below were prepared. Coextruded samples. All tie layers are commercially available except the experimental PRD940B. Tacryl TM 1080 is a styrene copolymer and PRD940B is a methyl acrylate / ethylene copolymer. Modulus is measured according to ASTM D638.

[0070] Each example was prepared using three Davis standard extruders (1.25 inch main extruder for the TPO base and two 1 inch satellite extruders for the cap stock and tie layer). These extruders were connected to a triple manifold 12 inch sheet die. All melting temperatures are about 210°C. The sheet was polished by passing the sheet through a 12 inch diameter three roll stack. The approximate thickness of each layer is 300 microns (cap layer), 300 microns (tie layer), and 2.2 mm (base).

Abstract

The invention relates to a multi-layer polymer structure having a polyolefin- based layer, an acrylic-based or other polar polymer layer, and a tie-layer between and adjacent to the polyolefin and polar polymer-based layers. Each layer could contain multiple sub-layers. The invention specifically relates to the composition of the tie- layer used to bond the polyolefin and the polar polymer layers together. The multilayer structure can contain more than three layers, with polar polymer layers on each side of the polyolefin-based layer, and can be made by any method known to the art. The multilayer structure exhibits excellent structural integrity, excellent surface appearance, high impact strength, high scratch resistance, and excellent resistance to UV radiation.
