Since the chemical composition of the molten metal can vary from heat to heat, it is not possible to directly calculate the liquidus critical temperature. As is known in the art, as a molten metal cools, the liquidus critical temperature (and information about its chemical composition) can be determined from its temperature profile over time (i.e. its cooling curve) . This determination is typically made using commercially available disposable cups (including thermocouples) for thermal analysis of molten metals. The molten metal is poured into the cup and the output of the thermocouple is analyzed to determine the characteristics of the molten metal.
