Embodiment Construction

[0025] The embodiments described herein describe various sorting operations. Pixel sorting can be performed by summing the charges from some pixels arranged diagonally in the pixel array. Pixel voltage signal outputs from diagonally arranged pixels in the pixel array may be combined on an output line. Signals representing summed charges yield sorted 2 × 1 clusters. The signals representing the combined pixel signals yield sorted 2x1 clusters. The signal representing the summed charge and the signal representing the combined voltage signal can be digitally combined to produce sorted 2x2 clusters. Orthogonal sorting can be performed on other pixels in the pixel array by summing the charges on the corresponding sensing regions and then combining the voltage signals representing the summed charges on the corresponding output lines.

Abstract

The present invention relates to pixel sorting in image sensors. A method and image capture device for sorting charges in an image sensor are disclosed. Pixel sorting is performed by summing the charges from some pixels arranged diagonally in the pixel array. Pixel signal outputs from pixels arranged diagonally in the pixel array may be combined on an output line. Signals representing summed charges yield sorted 2 × 1 clusters. The signal representing the combined voltage signal yields sorted 2x1 clusters.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to electronic devices, and more particularly, to image sensors for electronic devices. Background technique [0002] Cameras and other imaging devices often use one or more image sensors, such as charge coupled device (CCD) image sensors or complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors, to capture images. In some cases, the charges or signals generated by multiple pixels are binned or combined into a single signal. For example, pixel binning may be used when the output image resolution of the camera is less than the resolution of the image sensor in the camera, or to increase sensitivity when capturing images at low light levels. Pixel sorting can be performed in the pixel array, or after signals are read out from the pixel array. Summing the pixels after they have been read out from the pixel array does not increase the readout time since all pixels still have to be read out. In addition, noise...
