[0023] This application proposes a brand new wireless communication network architecture. In this network architecture, mobile devices can roam freely without going through traditional handover. Handover in traditional IP wireless communication networks usually involves operations at two layers, usually referred to as layer-2 handover and layer-3 handover. Layer-2 handover operations include channel probing, user authentication, channel association, and creation of new encryption keys. The operations of a layer-3 handover include obtaining a new IP address, establishing a new tunnel, user authentication, and location update. It usually takes 3 to 15 seconds to perform the switchover. Many packets are thus lost during the handover.

Abstract

An IP (Internet Protocol)-based wireless communication network is set up to enable mobility of devices without handover. In one aspect, a mobile device of the network broadcasts an anchor router solicitation message over a multicast channel, the anchor router solicitation message including a mobile device identification identifying the mobile device. Then, the mobile device receives the assigned IP address from the anchor router device through the multicast channel based on the detection of the anchor router solicitation message by the anchor router device in the vicinity of the mobile device. The mobile device is further responsive to the mobile device moving into the cell of one or more other router devices of the network, using the assigned IP address to connect with the one or more other router devices.
