Embodiment Construction

[0011] refer to figure 1 , shows the engine 10 in a partially disassembled state, as it would be if dismantled in preparation for remanufacturing. Engine 10 includes a cylinder block 12 and a cylinder head 14 shown separate from cylinder block 12 . In many cases, engine 10 may comprise a direct injection compression ignition engine, although the invention is not thus limited. Shown within the cylinder block 12 is a set of cylinder liners 20 , 120 and 220 . The set of cylinder liners may be received at the remanufacturing facility still located in the cylinder block 12, but may be disassembled from the cylinder block 12 and received as a loose unit for machining. Each cylinder liner of the set is a so-called top support cylinder liner, each having an elongated liner body defining a longitudinal central axis. figure 1 In FIG. 2 , certain features are labeled with respect to cylinder liner 20 , while other features are labeled and shown in more detail with respect to cylinder ...

Abstract

Remanufacturing a used cylinder liner (20) includes receiving a used cylinder liner (20) with a fillet (42) that relieves residual compressive stresses from working in an internal combustion engine (10), and compressing to form a fatigue sensitive fillet ( 42) the material substrate (23) of the cylinder liner, thereby reshaping the uneven profile of the fillet (42) by the plastic deformation of the material substrate (23). The residual compressive stress is at least partially restored to the fillet by plastic deformation. A mask and cylinder liner assembly (90) for machining a used cylinder liner (20) during remanufacturing is also disclosed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the field of remanufacturing and, more specifically, to restoring residual compressive stress to fatigue sensitive fillets in used cylinder liners. Background technique [0002] Cylinder liners have been used in internal combustion engines for many years. Rather than having cylinder bores defined directly by the engine block, the engine block may be provided with a plurality of cylinder liners, each cylinder liner defining a cylinder bore for receiving a piston. Cylinder liners are often removable so that when the engine is serviced or reassembled, the cylinder liners can be removed from the engine block and replaced with new ones. Operating conditions in a typical internal combustion engine are very demanding, with cylinder liners subjected to extreme temperatures, pressures, and relatively large swings in these variables. For these reasons, cylinder liners that have worn or deformed outside of their origin...
