Abstract

The present invention provides a vision system and analysis method for planar surface segmentation. The vision system is configured to dynamically inspect objects in the field of view. This involves using a camera to capture three-dimensional (3D) point cloud data of the field of view and converting each point of the 3D point cloud data into multiple tangential surface vectors. A surface normal vector for each point of the 3D point cloud data is determined based on the plurality of tangential surface vectors. A unit spherical mesh is used to detect distribution peaks in the surface normal vector. Separate parallel planes using distance distribution peaks. A radially adjacent nearest neighbor strategy is implemented, which is combined with a cell partition-based nearest neighbor process to partition planar blocks.
