Abstract

The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for bypassing a power stage of a multilevel inverter. A multi-level power converter (10), a power cell (100) and a method (510) are provided for selectively bypassing the power stages (100, 400) of a multi-level inverter circuit (40) wherein a single relay or contactor (500) comprises one or more normally closed output control contacts (CNC1, CNC2) coupled between a given power cell switching circuit and a given power unit output, and a cross power stage output (200) or a central controller (506) for energizing a coil (502) of a relay or contactor (500) of a given unit bypasses the normally open bypass contact (CNO1). The unit (100) is bypassed.
